Inspiring people to share
When the TYPO3 Community - today consisting of tens of thousands of developers worldwide, working together to further develop and improve this Open Source CMS - was founded by TYPO3's inventor, Kasper Skårhøj, he gave it a specific mission:
My idea for the TYPO3 community has always been: "To jointly innovate excellent free software - Enabling people to communicate".
To fill this mission with life and bring organization and structure to the entire undertaking, the TYPO3 Association, with its head office in Switzerland, was founded in 2004.
The goals of the Association are:
- To advance the permanent development of TYPO3, including quality assurance;
- To market TYPO3 as a product and improve its brand recognition;
- To promote and encourage better communication between T3 developers.
The TYPO3 Association in more detail:
- Financing
The TYPO3 Association is financed from two sources: members' subscriptions, and donations from companies and individuals who wish to advance the TYPO3 Project or support the work of its core developers. However, members' subscriptions remain the primary means of financing for this sophisticated Open Source project.
There are three membership options within the association: Active, Individual and Supporting Member. The subscription amount depends on the type of membership or support for the Association. More detailed information can be found on the Association's website.
- Fundraising
Donations from companies and individuals with an interest in the project are a further important element in the Association's financing. TYPO3 service providers and consultancies can ensure, via their donations, that TYPO3 will continue to be further developed and that its core programming, as well as its range of functions, will be continually improved and extended. To convince potential donors of the importance of supporting the Association, fundraising is actively carried out at trade fairs, congresses and User Days. In addition, a website is maintained especially to receive direct donations. The Founder and Managing director of AOE media is currently in charge of the T3 Association's fundraising activities.
- The core team
The TYPO3 Association finances the work of the so-called "T3 Core Team". The T3 Core Team, which currently consists of 26 Core developers, is responsible for the further technical development of TYPO3. Until 2007, Kasper Skårhøj himself was the Chief Developer for the TYPO3 4.xx-series, before handing the job on to his successor.
- Core Members are developers who hold responsibility. They are employed part time for the development of T3. The funds for this come from the membership subscription pool as well as other fund raising activities.
As the name reflects, the Core Members or Core Developers are responsible for the TYPO3 core programming, but not for the ongoing development of program extensions!
Thus the quality of extensions can vary considerably because, apart from the core team and the association, any user with some programming skills is perfectly entitled to create their own extensions and then file them for access in the TER (TYPO3 Extension Repository) for anyone else to download >> see: Customized Extensions
The TYPO3 Association maintains the following two websites:
- www.typo3.com - provides general information on T3 to its users and anyone else interested, while …
- www.typo3.org - primarily provides information for developers.
- Organizing the development community ...
… this takes place via numerous mailing lists as well as an ongoing series of annual events at which developers and interested parties meet to exchange information, listen to contributions from acknowledged T3 experts and attend workshops:
- T3 Conference
- T3 Developer Days
- T3 Snowboard Tour
In addition to these, there are many other events such as the T3 User Days, T3 Bar Camps, T3 User Group Meetings etc. at all of which a lively exchange on and around all things TYPO3 is guaranteed to take place.

Further information on TYPO3:
- Websites and Blogs:
But there is also a large community of individuals, users or service provider agencies outside the TYPO3 Association itself, many of whom are intensely involved in TYPO3, and who offer a range of free information on general or specific issues that may arise.
For example, the following websites offer a variety of TYPO3-related information:
and more...
This Blog offers specialized know-how on TYPO3:
and there's much more...
- Professional literature:
A range of professional literature already exists on TYPO3. Amazon lists about 50 titles that are concerned with TYPO3 and Typoscript. The best advice here is to go thoroughly through the reader evaluations, learning to discern the motives behind them, until you find the right book for your needs.
- Magazines:
There is currently no magazine specializing on TYPO3 in english language. You can find interesting articles in several linux related publications.
The most important GERMAN LANGUAGE magazine for TYPO3 is T3N Magazine, which is primarily concerned with TYPO3 or related fields.
T3N - Fachmagazin für TYPO3
More information can be found here: http://www.t3n.de/
- TYPO3 Agencies and Service Providers:
There are numerous specialized TYPO3 service providers in Germany, who dispose of considerable know-how on the design and implementation of complex TYPO3 Websites as well as the programming of extensions. For Germany alone, Google finds 401 entries under the search term "TYPO3 Agency". However, when choosing an agency, it is perhaps wiser to turn to the list of Association-approved firms, as they work closely in cooperation with the T3 Community, and are therefore better able to take quick advantage of technical improvements, thus ensuring the highest quality solutions.
AOE media features in this latter group. But please form your own opinion of what we have to Offer and read more about our Company Profile.
