www.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com is the place to go for people who want to get the latest films, music or PlayStation offerings. Sony Entertainment Network bundles all of Sony’s digital services. With “Music Unlimited” Sony Entertainment Network offers a personal library that can hold over ten million songs, with no advertising or downloads. “Video Unlimited” offers films for sale or rent. The site is also linked to the PlayStation network. Customers can access it by Smartphone, Sony Tablet, TV, PlayStation or PC. For the conversion of the existing portal, Sony Entertainment Network tapped Open Source expert AOE media.

The challenge

Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) commissioned AOE media to transfer the existing static site for the on-demand delivery of videos, games and music to the enterprise web content management system TYPO3 in its entirety, in 14 languages for 57 countries. In 17 cases this meant migrating the complete website; the remaining versions contain only country-specific Games Service Policies, important legal information for customers. Twice a week, SEN publishes new content to the portals, and this continued during the migration to TYPO3. This meant that AOE media always had to keep changes to the current static site synchronised with the new system. The relaunch also had to be kept invisible from users.

The solution

The migration to TYPO3 was successfully concluded after just six weeks. Up to 12 AOE media developers and project managers worked on the project so that the site could go live on schedule. AOE media used synchronised content to make sure the site remained available at all times, even while changes were being published. In addition, for 15 countries there is also a complete mobile version at m.sonyentertainment.com.

Technical features

• AOE media developed TYPO3 modules for updating music, video and game content, all with age verification, which had previously been updated statically.
• The portal is GEO-IP-sensitive and automatically sends visitors to the appropriate country version.
• The AOE Redirect Management Module was massively expanded to provide convenient editing of over 2,000 redirects directly in TYPO3. Prior to this the redirects had been done via the server configuration, which meant enormous extra effort for SEN.
• The special scraper function indexes legal information from SEN headquarters in Japan and publishes it to the site in all languages.

Summary

Sony Entertainment Network bundles all of Sony’s digital services - all offerings for all devices. With the migration to TYPO3, Sony Entertainment Network has full control of its global sites for the first time, with low dependency on its IT department. AOE media’s automated deployment process replaced manual deployments which were highly exposed to errors.
