HP Palm

PALM is a California based manufacturer of PDAs and smartphones. The company has been a subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard since 2010 and operates under the name of HP Palm. The smartphone operating system HP webOS is the successor to Palm OS. It is based on a Linux kernel and was introduced in 2009. At http://developer.palm.com, developers find a platform that offers information on the OS, podcasts, resources on various topics, an API guide, access to the developer community and many more features.

HP PALM chose TYPO3 because the content management system best fit their purpose. Features, flexibility, and sustainability where the convincing factors for the Californians. Open source specialist AOE media with its global setup and operating from six locations, was contracted with the deployment of the entire developer portal. TYPO3 and AOE media had been recommended to PALM by the San Francisco based design agency, Hot Studio,, who also designed the user interface of the developer platform. HOT studio and AOE media have already cooperated on several tech-projects, e.g. Parallels and Cisco WebEx.

As the project was to be implemented within a very short period of only two months, special attention was given to the following:

  • The design was initially deployed in HTML5 and CSS3. The CSS framework “Compass” was used to meet the top requirement of the customer-  highest performance. Compass transforms pictures as well as fonts into a comprisable 64–bit code. This way, pictures and fonts no longer need to be uploaded to the server and downloaded from the website by each user. This improves speed and common reloading effects can be avoided.
  • When changing from the earlier HP Palm developer platform to the present one, several thousands of content pages had to be migrated. AOE media solved this task with a custom-built content migrator. After a one time configuration, all content is transferred at the click of a button. A little post processing work is needed, but this is  negligiblecompared to the workload of manually editing the pages and transferring the content via copy and paste.
  • At “My Apps”, developers can access a password protected area. Their own apps can be managed here and submitted to HP Palm directly. With seamless integration the developers leave the TYPO3 platform at this point, as “My Apps” has been developed in-house by HP Palm. AOE media implemented a concept to integrate their codebase with TYPO3. This way the section still appears consistent with the rest of the  navigation bar at the top and footer remain in place.
