For one of the leading providers of knowledge-management software, empolis GmbH, we undertook a relaunch of their web presence in TYPO3. While maintaining the Corporate Designs of this Bertelsmann subsidiary, the quite considerable content had to be migrated from RedDot® and a variety of additional functions reprogrammed or created using TYPO3 extensions.

When creating their original website, empolis chose to play it safe from the outset by relying on a specialized Web Content Management System, instead of employing a solution from their own product portfolio. Initially launched on Red Dot®, over time the company sought to find a suitable Open Source, and thus license-free, solution. Finally, in October 2006 they decided on TYPO3 as their new Internet site running platform, and AOE media was entrusted with the conception, integration and installation of the new empolis web presence. In total the project presented the AOE media developers with quite some challenges: not entirely unproblematic was the complex task of migrating the highly diverse and already available data out of the Red Dot® system into TYPO3, the preservation thereby of arvato AG's corporate identity, as well as realizing some particular client wishes.

Thus the website was to integrate, in addition to a normal range of functions, a system for registering events, diverse micro-sites, a staff extension, modules for a news and press zone as well as a connection to an in-site search engine. The site's launch was accompanied by training sessions in TYPO3 for editors and administrators. By November 2006 the site was ready to go live and empolis was now able to structure, maintain, edit and update their own CMS system effectively and flexibly … without any more license fees to pay!

A year and a half later, in mid-2008, AOE media was once again entrusted with a relaunch of the site. The accent of this relaunch was a subtle remodeling and updating of the visual design of the site, as well as increasing its function through a customized registration form extension enabling customers to sign up for special training seminars taking place at irregular intervals. The concept and realization of this project took only three months, so that the new-look, functionally-augmented empolis site was ready to go live in November 2008.
